Cross Keys v Newport British and Irish Cup

Cross Keys host local rivals Newport at Pandy Park this coming Saturday on the second weekend of British and Irish cup fixtures. Not only is this cup rugby but also this is a Gwent derby so this game promises all you need for a classic encounter.

Newport got they're British & Irish Cup campaign off to a winning start against Connacht Eagles at Rodney Parade last weekend with an 18-14 victory over the Irish visitors. The Black and Ambers points against the Eagles came from tries by Craig Atwell and Will Richards whilst former Pontypool outside half Tom Hancock kicked 2 penalties and a conversion. Newport were fortunate enough to be able to call on Dragons players, Nathan Williams, Tim Ryan and Tonderai Chavhanga for the Eagles' clash. It is not known at this stage if these players will be involved in Saturday's game.

Meanwhile Keys were being given a strict lesson by in form Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park in the North-East. Eventually The Falcons ran out winners by 52 points to 5 Jonathan Lewis was the Keys only scorer with a try in the dying moments of the game. Falcons coach Dean Richards praised Keys commitment and commented that, this season other sides will certainly not pose the sort of challenges to his side that Keys did on Saturday.

Keys were undefeated in Gwent derby games last season and want to keep that run going this season starting on Saturday. The Keys defeated Newport twice in the league last sesson, at Rodney Parade on Boxing Day they delivered a 40-22 hammering to their hosts then went even better at Pandy Park in March when they triumphed by 51 points to 14. Keys established themselves firmly as Gwent's number one club side last season and again this is another target for this season.
