Newport v Cross Keys Match Preview & Team News

Cross Keys travel the short distance to Rodney Parade to take on Newport in the penultimate group game of this season's British & Irish Cup.

It was way back in December of last year (or just over 2 weeks ago!) that we last played Newport in the Principality Premiership at Pandy Park. On that occassion Keys, of course comfortably defeated the Black and Ambers by 29 points to 9 in a bonus point victory. Keys tries coming from Dorian Jones, Luke Williams, Rob Nash and Rhys Dyer whilst the Jones' (Dorian and Steffan) shared 9 points with the boot, Dorian kicking 2 conversions and a penalty with Steffan adding another conversion. For the Black and Ambers former Keys fly half Scott Sneddon was the only scorer with 3 penalties. Newport were out of sorts that evening prompting coach Sven Cronk to admit that the scoreline flattered his side somewhat. Surely Newport, espeicially on their own turf will be a different kettle of fish this weekend.
Back in October Keys hosted Newport in the 2nd week of British & Irish Cup games and were defeated by the Black and Ambers who triumphed by 24 points to 20. Keys points coming from winger Elliot Jones and a penalty try, with Dorian Jones kicking 2 conversions and 2 penalty goals. For Newport, skipper Craig Atwell and their own penalty try helped them to acheive a deserved victory whilst 14 points from the trusty boot of Scott Sneddon did the rest.

Qualification from the group was always going to be an uphill battle for both sides considering the presence of the almost unstoppable Newcastle Falcons in the same group. So perhaps Saturday's game shows that nothing more than local pride is at stake with the result of this game.

The Cross Keys team has been confirmed and Keys are captained by Garry Horrigan, who will also captain Keys against Newcastle next weekend with Rob Nash being given a well deserved rest just as many of his team-mates have also been.
