Match Preview

Cross Keys v Aberavon Principality Premiership

Cross Keys host Aberavon this coming Saturday in the Principality Premiership at Pandy Park.

The Wizards will head to Pandy Park in search of their first win of the season having been defeated by Newport (23-20) on the opening day then last weekend suffered a heavy 32-13 defeat at St. Helens versus Swansea. The Wizards are, without a doubt a better side than these two defeats suggest. Since the start of the regional era they have regularly finished amongst the top places in the final table. They have been incredibly consistent throughout and their record against Keys proves this, with Keys winning just 10 of the 40 previous meetings between the sides.

The game against Swansea last week was certainly one to forget for the Wizards. Their points coming from Ospreys back row Morgan Allen and Steffan Andrews, the winger signed from Tonmawr. The prolific boot of Jamie Davies adding a penalty goal. Against Newport, the Black and Ambers were victorious at the Talbot Athletic Ground thanks to a stoppage time try from Elliott Frewen, with former Keys man Scott Sneddon adding the conversion with virtually the last kick of the match.

Aberavon are of course coached by former Keys coach, Simon King. His long standing assistant Nicky Lloyd, another former Keys coach, left the club in the summer. Lloyd's replacements are former Wales great Mark Taylor and ex-Dragons outside half Craig Warlow. The Wizards conditioning coach is Wales rugby league legend Kevin Ellis and they are managed by their former second row Chris Gittings.

The Keys will need to be aware of a Wizards backlash on Saturday. Keys will need to improve on last Saturday although a win of any fashion at this stage of the season is certainly satisfactory. Team news will appear later in the week.
