Cross Keys host Bedwas at Pandy Park this Saturday in the Principality Premiership.
Bedwas have made an excellent start to the season and currently sit in 3rd place in the Principality Premiership table, a point and a place above Keys with both sides having played 7 and winning 5 of their games so far. The only defeats for the Bridge Field men have both come away from home with defeats at Pontypridd (27-55) and at Aberavon (22-25). However the 5 victories have been entertaining encounters with wins over Carmarthen Quins (22-16), Swansea (34-17), Newport (26-25), Llanelli (30-16) and a high scoring victory over Neath (49-38).
For the last two weeks the Principality Premiership has made way for the British & Irish Cup and although both Keys and Bedwas have made excellent starts in the league this season, the British & Irish cup has been the complete opposite for both sides with Keys defeated by first, Newcastle (52-5) then last Saturday at home to Newport (24-20). Bedwas have succombed to two heavy defeats by Mike Rayer's Bedford (48-23) and to Neath at the Gnoll by 45-27.
Last season's games between the two sides saw Keys emerge with the double. At the Bridge Field Keys won by 26-11 with tries by Nathan Williams (x2) and Nathan Trowbridge and 11 points from the boot of ex-Wales outside half Matthew Jones. Bedwas' points coming from a James Murphy try with Richard Powell kicking 2 penalties. At Pandy Park back in January Keys won 12-3 with 2 Nathan Trowbridge tries and a conversion by Steffan Jones, Bedwas could only manage a Richard Powell penalty. There was also a meeting in the Swalec Cup at Pandy Park at the end of January and just a single point seperated the two sides as Keys started their successful cup campaign with a 10-9 win. Leon Andrews got Keys try with Sam Mills adding the conversion and Dean Gunter, making his debut kicked a penalty. Richard Powell kicked 3 penalties for Bedwas.
Two sides in good league form, just a point apart, at the top end of the table sound like good ingredients for an entertaining derby clash, potentially not for the faint hearted.
Team news will appear later in the week.
