Cross Keys v Bargoed Preview and Team News

Cross Keys welcome Bargoed to Pandy Park this Saturday in the Principality Premiership, looking to bounce back after a disappointing run of 3 successive defeats.

Like Keys, Bargoed have lost their last 3 games, the most recent of which was their WRU National Cup quarter final defeat at the hands of Ebbw Vale on Wednesday evening. The 2 sides have an identical record of 2 wins from their 5 games in the full Principality Premiership campaign so far but Keys sit in 12th place on 13 points in the Principality Premiership table, 2 places ahead of the Bulls who have a total of 10 points so far.

Earlier this season the two sides met twice in the East conference of the Principality Premiership, with honours going the way of the away side on each occasion. At Pandy Park in September it was Bargoed who secured a convincing bonus point victory over Keys when they won by 34 points to 23. Points for Keys in that defeat came via a try apiece for Josh Skinner and Joe Goodchild, both of which being converted by former Bulls outside half Josh Prosser, who also added pair of penalties to add to one kicked by Dragons full back Carl Meyer. For the Bulls former Keys number 8 Ieuan Jones crossed for the opening try, with Grant Rogers, Ashley Norton also crossing to add to a converted penalty try. Matthew Lewis kicked all 3 of his conversions as well as a pair of penalties. Keys got revenge for that disappointing defeat  back in November when they came away from Bargoed Park with a 25 points to 9 defeat on Bulls soil. Keys tries came from Taine Basham, Mathew Powell and Joe Goodchild with Josh Prosser adding 2 conversions and 2 penalties. Bargoed's points came via 3 penalties by outside half Iain Smerdon.

Turning back to Saturday's game and Cross Keys have announced their side which shows numerous changes to the side that started in the WRU National Cup quarter final defeat to Llandovery on Wednesday evening. In the pack Keys change their props with Luke Garrett and Scott Evans swapping places with Corey Hewlett and Richard Cornock. There is also a change at hooker where Zac Hewlett comes in for his first start for Keys. He replaces Darren Hughes who moves to the back row. In that back row Keys are forced in to changes, as both Adam Powell and Josh Skinner were injured during Wednesday's defeat, and were on crutches after the game on Wednesday. This means that Joe Thomas starts for Keys alongside Hughes on the other flank. Keys skipper Scott Matthews makes a positional change to number 8 to accommodate Thomas on the openside. In the backs there is just one changes which sees Barney Nightingale come in to the centre to replace Lewis Barnett who was also injured during Wednesday's game.
