Bedwas came away triumphant from Pandy Park after a game which could have been highly entertaining had a game of rugby actually been allowed to take place instead of one dominated by the referee's whistle.
Almost 60 points were scored in what sounds like it should have been cracking encounter. The fact is that the try line was only crossed twice, once by each side. The deadly boots of Keys' Dean Gunter and Bedwas' Richard Powell basically doing the rest. Not only were the ammount of penalties given sky high but also the card total for some unknown reason was unbelievably high with a total of 7 yellows and 1 red being issued. 4 yellows to Keys and 3 to Bedwas plus the red to Bedwas' James Richards. To most that will make it sound like a dirty game which could not be further from the truth, one set of handbags throughout the game produced nothing more than a telling off from the referee to respective hookers Garry Horrigan and Rhys Hutcherson.
Bedwas were on the scoreboard first and raced into a healthy early lead thanks to Richard Powell's trusty boot and a try by full back Stuart Thomas thanks to Keys poor tackling attempts. Keys did manage a reply on the stroke of half time when down to 13 men with Hodge junior (Danny) and Aled James in the sin bin, Hodge senior (Ollie) found himself crashing over from close range, Keys full back Gareth David converting.
Half time score Cross Keys 10 Bedwas 25
The second was much of the same as Keys, thanks to 6 second half penalties by Gunther clawed their way back to 28 all right up to the last kick of the game when Powell kicked a penalty to give Bedwas the points.
Overall a defeat but Keys can hold their heads high after actually trying to do what people come to see on a cold but bright Autumnal day - PLAY RUGBY. For the record Keys yellow card were issued to Garry Horrigan, Danny Hodge, Aled James and Rob Nash. Keys number 8 Adam Powell was chosen as the committee's man of the match for the second week in a row after a superb all round performance.
