A tight game at Pandy Park on Friday evening saw Keys edge out Bridgend to secure a 2nd successive victory in Tier 2 of the Principality Premiership.
With the game kicking off almost 10 minutes late due to a powercut which saw the whole village plunged into darkness, it was Keys who opened the scoring when Josh Prosser kicked a penalty with 5 minutes on the clock. This early advantage was soon cancelled out when Bridgend’s outside half Joseph Scrivens kicked a penalty just a few minutes later.
Keys certainly appeared to have the upper hand as they hammered away at the Ravens’ line but all they had to show for their efforts was a second Prosser penalty which was kicked with 20 minutes played.
With a little over 30 minutes played the Ravens took the lead for the first time when a surging break deep in to Keys territory saw the ball worked in to the arms of supporting scrum half Will Baird who had the relatively straight forward task of crossing for the games first try as the visitors led for the first time. Scrivens added the conversion to increase the Ravens lead.
On the stroke of half time the Ravens ensured they would go in to the break with their tails up as Scrivens added his second penalty for a 7 point cushion at the interval.
Half Time Score Cross Keys 6 Bridgend 13
With Keys immediately on the front foot early in the second half they were denied a clear scoring opportunity when Ravens hooker Iestyn Merriman killed the ball just metres from his own try line. Merriman was subsequently sent to the sin bin for the professional foul and Keys wasted no time in making their one man advantage tell.
A powerful drive toward the Ravens try line from a Keys scrum saw the Ravens concede another penalty just short of their own line. Keys kept up the pressure and opted for another penalty. This time Keys number 8 Ieuan Jones broke from the base of the scrum and powered over for Keys first try of the evening. Josh Prosser added the extras to tie the scores with a little over 30 minutes remaining.
A fairly equal period saw neither side able to force their way through with solid defensive work from both sides ensuring that chances were few and far between.
Keys eventually took the lead with 10 minutes remaining thanks to Prosser’s 3rd penalty of the game which ultimately proved decisive as Keys secured the narrow victory with Keys keeping control during the closing moments.
