Aberavon v Cross Keys Preview & Team News

By David Glastonbury | 16/03/2018

Cross Keys are back on the road again this evening (15/03/2018) as they head to the Talbot Athletic Ground to take on Aberavon in the Principality Premiership.

The Wizards have had a largely disappointing second half of the season so far, in the full Principality Premiership. They have won just 1 of their 6 games played so far in the full Principality Premiership campaign, although that victory was a convincing 41 points to 13 at Parc y Scarlets over Llanelli at the end of February.  They have lost the other 5 league fixtures, against Swansea (19 – 7) and RGC1404 (16 – 12) at home and on the road, at Llandovery (30 – 7), Carmarthen Quins (21 – 15) and Bargoed (16 -14) in recent weeks. This is very unusual for the Wizards who are normally there or thereabouts at the top of the league throughout the season. They are currently level on points with Keys in 11th place in the Principality Premiership table but Keys are place above them, separated by Points difference, although Keys have 2 games in hand over the Wizards.

Last season the 2 sides met just once, which was back in October 2016 when the Wizards cruised to a 39 points to 14 victory at Pandy Park in the Principality Premiership. Points for Keys came via tries by Darren Hughes and Josh Skinner, which were both converted by Josh Prosser. Aberavon’s scores came from a pair a tries by Steffan  Andrews, together with one each for David Evans, Chris Davies, David Pritchard, Ben Davies and Luke Joseph. James Garland managed to convert just 2 of his 7 conversion attempts on a good day for the Wizards.

The Cross Keys side for Friday’s game has been announced and it shows multiple changes to the side that started last week against Carmarthen Quins. Amongst the changes Keys bring in Owain Leonard at scrum half, whilst Luke Garrett also starts in the front row. Also in the pack Keys give a well-earned rest to Tom Lampard with Josh Skinner moving in to the second row and Joe Thomas being rewarded for an impressive show off the bench last week as he comes in to start in the back row.

The Cross Keys side in full is:-

15. Leon Andrews
14. Mathew Powell
13. Lewis Barnett
12. Barney Nightingale
11. Nathan Trowbridge

10. Josh Prosser
9. Owain Leonard

1. Luke Garrett
2. Darren Hughes
3. Scott Evans
4. Josh Skinner
5. Scott Andrews
6. Scott Matthews (c)
7. Joe Thomas
8. Adam Powell

Replacements: 16. Gary Carpenter, 17. Corey Hewlett, 18. Richard Cornock, 19. Ashley Gibson, 20. Tom Lampard, 21. Corey Shephard, 22. Ross Pritchard, 23. Calvin Wellington.
